Rodinné vinárstvo Mátyás

Rodinné vinárstvo Mátyás received Farma živá award in 2024.

Rodinné vinárstvo Mátyás is located in Nová Vieska in the South Slovakia wine region, between Štúrovo and Komárno, in a picturesque area of vineyards and wine cellars. The winery was founded in 2003, when András Mátyás began expanding the family vineyard and cellar. Today it farms 12 hectares of its own vineyards in the Szőlőhegy area near Nová Vieska, part of the Strekov wine-growing district. The farm focuses on organic viticulture and has been certified organic since 2013. Yields are reduced to 1–1.5 kg per vine to achieve the highest possible quality. Traditional methods are used in winemaking, such as fermenting the must and ageing it on the lees in wooden barrels, while the use of sulphur is kept to a minimum and additives are avoided altogether.

The winery has also decided to work with BROZ on the LIFE Juh project and has started grazing sheep on the Drieňová hora SCI. This nature reserve was established in 1964 in the cadastral area of Nová Vieska in the Nitra Region. It covers 9.708 hectares and its main aim is to preserve the remnants of steppe plant and animal communities. Protected species found here include dwarf Russian almond, spring pheasant's eye, feather grass, greater pasque flower, dwarf iris and the European green lizard. Sheep grazing plays a key role in maintaining and supporting the biodiversity of the site. In autumn and winter the sheep also keep the neighbouring vineyard tidy.
