Gazdovská dedinka Abeland
The Abel family farm is in Lozorno, in the picturesque setting of the Little Carpathian forests. The farm includes a village of crafts and art that is open to the public and hosts events such as medieval days and courses in basket weaving and pottery. What deserves praise is that the Abel family built most of the craft village buildings themselves. They keep a range of free-range animals such as horses, cows, goats, sheep, pigs, hens and geese. They grow vegetables on permaculture principles and have created several wetlands and other features supporting biodiversity on their land.
We would like to highlight the Abel family's emphasis on the genius loci and on preserving the cultural heritage of traditional crafts.
Comments from members of the Krajina živá expert panel after visiting the farm:
Ing. Jaroslav Jankovič CSc., agroforester:
“A family farm founded on abandoned, scrub-covered meadows in a stream valley. Besides organic crop and livestock production with agroforestry elements, the farm deserves very high praise for its educational role, carried out through a wide range of events for school and pre-school children.”
Mgr. Adriana Hološková, ornithologist:
“By creating natural ponds, the owners of Abeland have made a great habitat for amphibians. During our visit we saw a large number of freshly metamorphosed froglets, which will go on to help with the biological protection of crops on the farm.”
